As defined in Merriam-Webster, social media are forms of electronic communication (such as websites for social networking and microblogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content (such as videos).

It is the lovechild of the world wide web offering multiple possibilities to the consumers. Moreover, it feeds our needs, as humans are social creatures. It allows us to interact, meet new people and share our similarities and differences. It crosses boundaries; rich or poor, well-developed countries to striving ones and builds relationships along the way.

It simple began exclusively for Harvard students as a school directory featuring their photos and basic information. Now, it has evolved into a giant player in the digital world. According to statista.com, as of the third quarter of 2018, Facebook had 2.27 billion monthly active users. Active users are those which have logged in to Facebook during the last 30 days.

Facebook features allows companies to create their pages where they can broadcast the services they offer. Furthermore, they can boost their advertisement so that it frequently pops out in the newsfeed. Even small time, entrepreneur can use this social networking app to post for sale items, it may be newly bought ones or pre-owned merchandise that they want to dispose.

Moreover, because its user-friendly, both freelancers and business owners can lay down their services to the public easily.

It helps if companies have an eye-catching image and a quirky slogan so that users will double tap the photo and then later follow the business or the brand. There has been an influx of sponsored ads appearing in this social app proving its popularity.

2005 was the birth of YouTube, created by 3 former PayPal employees. A year later, it was bought by Google for US $1.65 billion. It allowed users to create and share media/ videos. Moreover, users can like, share, rate and subscriber to accounts that regularly upload videos. There are various available contents from television clips, movie clips and news agencies like BBC, Al Jazeera are sharing their news and documentaries via this social app. Being a video blogger is becoming a trend among the younger population because of its following in the internet. These people, most are not celebrities, are giving their opinions over a certain product. Now with YouTube’s vast audience, a lot of businesses are rooting for these vloggers to showcase their merchandise in the hopes of increasing their sales.

Mostly everyone if not all, own an account to at least one of the platforms mentioned above. Its fame has greatly impacted and shaped our society today. Businesses no matter how small or big, if it wants to reach its market, social media is the way to go. It is convenient, cost-effective and somewhat easy depending on how techy savvy one is.

Days are gone where business owners use newspapers, television and radio to post their ads and taking control on the message they send. If a business would like to reach its market, one would have to use any of the above-mentioned social networking sites to advertise their products. It’s reachability to the masses is unparalleled because everyone is hooked in their smartphones.

It looks as though it is here to stay. Asia accounts for almost half of the world’s population of internet users at 49 percent followed by Europe at 16.8 percent.
